We'll always love and miss Brad - and we'll always be thankful for those with the talent to allow his music to live on, even if that means occasionally taking a stab at re-upping or remixing an old jam.With the likes of Katy Perry and Britney Spears still dominating pop music in the early 21st Century, a younger generation of fans entered the 2010s seeking something new. And I speak for many Sublime fans who feel the same. Brad's legacy LIVES on through works like these and new songs by Rome. And I know this is true because I don't give a FUCK who this chick is but I will come back and listen to this cover for years to come. They are looking to obviously pay homage to influences of theirs. They aren't looking for quick credit for Brad's work.
But, I feel about this cover the same way I feel about Rome Ramirez - that they HONOR everything that Sublime did with their music. Sometimes artists go on an ego trip with a cover - and I realize Sublime is a touchy band to cover, given Brad's unfortunate death.
It retains key elements of the original - like, 80% of the original - with 20% new spin and a vibe that is the new artists. What does that mean? It means that this is the way a cover song should be done. The vibe here is pure and the intentions are good. I don't care what you think of her, how popular she is or how popular this cover has become - the only thing that matter is that this cover HONORS Sublime and doesn't denegrate them. No clue who the chick is that sings this song - just heard it for the first time tonight. I loved Sublime in the 90's, grew up listening to them, was in a touring ska band, played with the Long Beach Dub Allstars and love Sublime w/Rome. I am as big of a Sublime fan as they come. Here's my opinion, which no one asked for. So many people I talk to have beef with this cover. SORRY THIS IS SO LONG - But, OK, lets talk about this shit.
